King David committed the sins of adultery and murder against God and he continued on with his life until God sent Nathan, the prophet to confront him of his sins. It was God’s love at work to be sending a prophet to speak a message of conviction. How, we need the Holy Spirit to bring conviction to our hearts when we read and meditate on His Word. It is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance. After being convicted of his sins, King David did not respond lightly. We saw the struggle and the brokenness of his heart in Psalm 51. The motivation of his repentance was not to lose the Presence of God in his life. His priority in life was the Presence of God and the Holy Spirit. We can have all different kinds of motivation when we repent of our sins but King David realized he had sinned against God. His prayer in verses 10 and 11 is a prayer we can adopt as ours. It is a prayer that will be answered by God – Create in me a clean heart, O God. And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
