God is love and we are called to become like Him, i.e. that we also become love. Only those who love, know God. Those who love one another abide in God. To abide in God, we must abide in love. Our abiding in God is made possible by the Spirit of God. Hence, we need the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Love to learn to love (including loving one another), to learn to abide in love and to abide in God. By knowing the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Love, we begin to view “being led by the Spirit” and “walking in the Spirit” differently as we begin to understand how God works in us through the Holy Spirit. Returning to the Shulamite’s declaration that “his love is better than wine”, we also learn the God’s love can be intoxicating, has anesthetic properties, gives us boldness and brings healing to us. By making comparison to wine, God’s love is also “consumable”. Let us drink more of His love for His love is better than wine.
