Reflections on Psalm 139

This beautiful psalm begins by the psalmist recounting and revealing a God Who has a covenant-based knowledge about us. In addition to the intimate, “yada” knowing, our God understands, comprehends and is acquainted with us. His dealing in our lives by setting up hedges appears to sometimes limit or restrict us but ultimately, His purpose is to protect us. The psalmist then shifted the focus to himself, where simply put, he just could not run away from God. As much as we want to hide ourselves and be in a far-away place in our darkest and lowest moments in life, He will always be there with us! In the following verses, we discover the 2-fold declarations of the psalmist about ourselves, i.e. God’s divine design and God’s divine destiny in our lives.  When David, the psalmist, meditated upon the revelation of God’s thoughts of him in the night, he tapped into the supernatural and had access to the Manifest Presence of God. Then, he began to understand the heart of God and aligned his heart with God’s. David ended the psalm in the best possible way by instructing us through his example of a personal response unto God. As much as he knew God’s knowledge about himself, he partnered with God by opening up himself willingly and yielding himself to the Lord.
